It’s well known that meditation has many science-based benefits like reducing stress and anxiety, enhancing self-awareness, and promoting emotional health. But, in addition to being regarded as an amazing spiritual and mental health strategy, did you know that meditation is also good for your skin?
Here’s something that the skincare industry usually doesn’t talk about: strong, youthful beautiful skin is a function good mental health. The science of this relationship is known as psychodermatology which doctors define as the as the link between psychology and the skin. To put it simply mental health issues can affect skin for better or worse. Stinking thinking means lousy skin. Peaceful and relaxing thoughts mean glowing and healthy skin. This is why meditation, a calming mental health technique associated with contentment and satisfaction can help slow down the skin aging process, inhibit the deterioration of skin and connective tissue, and can help relieve skin irritations like eczema or rosacea.
Meditation is also effective at:
Activating relaxation in the nervous system, which helps protect your skin from environmental toxins and improves skin cell regeneration
Supporting your circulatory system, which promotes nutrition, oxygenation, and detoxification to the skin
Improving sleep, a process that promotes crucial skin healing for healthy skin
Unsure of where to start when it comes to meditation? We highly recommend starting small—take 5 minutes out of your morning to close your eyes, take deep breaths, and focus on awareness of the present moment. From there, you can work your way up to longer meditation sessions. You can also enlist the help of a meditation app like Headspace or Calm if you prefer guided meditations. These apps even have multi-day courses on different topics (like personal growth, work & productivity, and stress & anxiety), as well as meditation sessions for particular moods or situations (like falling asleep & waking up, feeling overwhelmed, or losing your temper).
So, while meditation may sound like just hippie-dippie fad, it’s actually extremely effective at promoting good skin health. The next time you sit down to take a few moments for yourself through mindful meditation, you can rest easy knowing that it’s helping your mind, and your skin!
